Our principal aim is that children leave Our Lady's with a wide range of happy and rich memories in Music forme through interesting and exciting experiences. We will provide opportunities that enhance a child's awareness of their own abilities and strengths as a learner in Music and help them see learning in music as an ongoing journey.

At Our Lady's, children will gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, appraising, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and comparing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres.

We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wide community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to engage in music and express themselves in a variety of different contexts.

Cultural Capital

At Our Lady's, we wish for all children to leave our school with a sense of self and a confidence to succeed in life. We seek to build children's Cultural Capital through the provision of music in numerous guises. We embrace and teach children about a variety of musical styles from different backgrounds, heritage, language, traditions, and musical periods.

Providing musical expertise throughout the school in all year groups allows pupils to develop confidence in their own performance and enhances their ability to work collaboratively. As a school, we plan for opportunities to allow pupils to perform in the wider community.

Core Values

Children show mutual respect and appreciation for music, whether they enjoy making it or listening to it. This can be through a variety of different ways. Children experience a democratic approach through voting for their favourite pieces and performances, using their voice to explain their choices and also work together in collaboration to plan performances. They develop a tolerance for other children's opinions when talk about different musicians, instruments and genres. They follow rules and learn how to take turns through musical games to make a successful musical experience. Children develop their individual liberty during solo performances, group performances and class productions developing their self-esteem, confidence and pride.
